Residence Life Assistants

This is a responsible, key holding position, assisting the Residence Management team in ensuring the smooth running of the Student Residences. Responding to all emergencies during hours of work and to be available in the residence office to deal with any resident queries, concerns or problems. RLAs are to actively encourage a sense of community spirit whilst undertaking their role. Successful applicants must show initiative for problem solving and enthusiasm for the role.

 Responsibilities:

  • To be the Southampton Solent University representative within the residence, acting as a point of contact for staff, students, parents, contractors and other guests and visitors.
  • To actively encourage a sense of community spirit within the residences.
  • Assist residents in their adjustment to community living.
  • To actively encourage group activities amongst the residences.
  • Provide assistance and advice to residents about day-to-day living in the residences.
  • Design and implement experiences that enhance the social, educational, community, and personal development of residents.
  • Maintain contact with residents throughout the year by encouraging and organising events which meet the requirements established by the Residence Team.

  • Written logs and check sheets must be completed fully as defined in Southampton Solent University procedures.

About you: 

  • Applicant must be a current student with at least a full year of study to complete at Southampton Solent University, at the time of application.
  • Applicants with a poor disciplinary record may not be invited to the ‘Auditions’ and successful applicants who later receive disciplinary warnings may be removed from the process.
  • A basic knowledge of the principles of data protection is essential.
  • An understanding of the elements of good customer care is essential.
  • An understanding of how Student Residences operate is desirable.
  • Experience of customer service is desirable.
  • Team working experience desirable.
  • Administration skills experience is desirable.
  • Experience of working under pressure is desirable.
  • A good level of verbal and written English is required.
  • Good telephone manner.

Please note, if you are a holder of a Tier 4 visa you will have certain conditions and working restrictions attached to your visa. Generally, students studying towards a degree level qualification (NQF6) or above are restricted to a maximum of 20 hours work per week during term time, which is reduced to 10 hours per week for students studying below degree level. Please check your visa for more details. It is a criminal offence to breach the conditions of your visa, and anyone found doing so by UK Visas and Immigration is likely to have their permission to stay in the UK cancelled.
