Alumni Social Media and Database placement - 15 hours per week

Doing a work placement is a fantastic way to learn about the professional world. It will build your confidence and look great on your CV. Employers look for it, so it will give you the edge when it’s time to start your career and it can lead to job offers in the future.

This micro-placement is available to 2nd or 3rd year students who may not have had relevant work experience related to their studies.

The placement will be based within Solent University for the equivalent of 2 days (15 hours) a week (7.5 hours per day) for up to 10 weeks.

You will need to register with Campus Jobs if you are successful at the interview.

Students may wish to use this placement towards a placement requirement of their course or outside of their course. Please specify in your Cover message if you are planning to use this experience as part of a core work placement unit. 

About the role

This role will support the delivery of our Alumni Relations and Philanthropy supporting sub-strategy. The aim of the strategy is to develop mutually beneficial, lifelong relationships with our alumni and supporters which in turn enables University growth, underpins reputation and maximises our capacity to deliver our strategy Building an excellent university. The post holder with the support of the Alumni Relations and Fundraising Officer will help manage the alumni database and social media. The post holder will make a major contribution to the future and legacy of the Alumni Relations and Philanthropy programme for the University. 


  • Social media: You will work across the University’s alumni social media channels, impacting upon our range of audiences, by:
  • Suggesting and gathering content, which could include interviewing academics, experts, alumni and students, taking pictures, creating video etc.
  • Writing and creating content appropriate for each of the channels.
  • Scheduling content through the University’s system
  • Database: You will maintain and cleanse the alumni database including updating records, answering data requests and improving the accuracy of our data.
  • Brand champion: The new Solent brand is a core part of communications and engagement and this post holder will be a champion for the brand and ensure all content reflects the University visually.
  • As a member of the wider Communications and Alumni Relations team, you will:
  • Work with the wider-External Relations department, and other key central departments, to create great compelling content.
  • Demonstrate an outstanding level of customer service.

About you:

  • Studying towards a degree from Solent University 


  • Good working knowledge of software packages such as Microsoft Office
  • Social media channels and audiences
  • Good understanding of Excel 


  • Social media scheduling

  • Good administrative and organisational skills
  • Good written skills, including writing and producing compelling content in a range of formats

The placement is only available to Solent undergraduates who meet the following criteria:

  • Studying towards a Bachelor’s degree at Solent University
  • In their 2nd or 3rd years
  • Have no work experience in a professional office environment
  • Students holding a visa will need to check their Biometrics Residence Card (BRP) for work conditions.
