Graphic Designer Placement

Solent University is working in partnership with Go! Southampton to provide this exciting opportunity.

Local context

Southampton is the major city on the South coast and one of the region’s fastest growing, with a population of over 250,000 and a catchment area exceeding two million people.

The city offers a top 20 UK university education, a shopping experience ranked in the UK’s top 20 and employment for 33,000 people in the city centre alone.

Southampton’s port is the UK’s number one vehicle handling port, and Europe’s leading cruise turnaround terminal, while Southampton has recently joined the UK’s top 20 cities by number of visitors staying overnight.

The magazine:

The placement involves the development of a new online magazine to promote the city and attract new visitors. Each issue will have a set theme to promote a different area of Southampton – which will be agreed and discussed with the editorial team at a briefing meeting. The magazine is targeted at visitors and locals aiming at showcasing and new locations and activities in the city.

Key responsibilities

  • Liaise with client and editorial team.
  • Design the logo and magazine layout.
  • Production of magazine templates for future editions.
  • Layout the first issue of the online magazine.
  • Develop guidelines for future editions.

Skills & Software:

You will have experience in the production of creating magazines and have a strong desire to create stylish modern print and digital media.

The graphic designer will:

  • Be a confident, creative and innovative designer
  • Be confident with the Adobe Suite, specifically InDesign
  • Have an obsession for typography
  • A good understanding of layout, and a talent for composition
  • Experience in working within a team
  • Need strong organisational skills, verbal and written communications
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude, flexibility, creativity, and ‘outside the box’ thinking
  • Be able to deliver multiple solutions for our executive team to consider
  • Be passionate and pragmatic about your creative work
  • Have good graphic design knowledge
  • Fast learner and efficient worker


The role will be based at the Go! Southampton office in Southampton.

The interview dates for this post will be 4 and 5 October, so you need to be available at least one of these day.

This post will be within the following dates 08/10/18 - 11/03/19 and will be for 12 full days within this period.  This will be discussed with the successful candidate and suitable days can be agreed.

Salary: £8.25ph
