Job summary

We are seeking candidates for a trainee position with the Go! Southampton Business Improvement District (BID) in Southampton city centre. You will support Giles Semper, CEO, and deliver a range of placemaking and place management projects under the BID’s ‘Stronger Business’ theme.

We are seeking candidates with a strong interest in urban development, regeneration, placemaking, or related areas who are seeking a nurturing environment in which to grow their experience.

At the outset of the placement we will identify training opportunities for the individual – both internal and external. These may include visits to other Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), to partner organisations in the city and to organisations (both private and not-for-profit) working with BIDs and similar organisations.

This opportunity is also being offered as a level 4/5 apprenticeship – i.e. for a longer period. Please indicate if you are interested in this possibility.

Main tasks

To support the Go! Southampton interim CEO, board and executive team in delivering a range of placemaking and place management projects under its ‘Stronger Business’ theme. Specific duties will include:

  • Provide on-the-ground support and back-up for the CEO, Giles Semper, managing his diary and responding to enquiries.
  • Assist in the delivery of BID projects, particularly under the ‘Stronger Business’ theme.
  • Assist in the development of the BID’s framework of metrics for monitoring the health of the city centre.
  • Gather relevant data on the city’s performance.
  • Support the BID’s response to external policy consultations.
  • Assist in developing the BID’s relationships with a variety of external stakeholders and partners (including BID member businesses).
  • Administer meetings of the ‘Stronger Business’ theme group.
  • Help set up and manage BID events.
  • Assist with general BID administration.

Reporting to

Giles Semper, CEO

Hours and remuneration

40 hours per week. £7.38 per hour. In common with he rest of the team, some unremunerated work may be required outside normal working hours. On the rare occasions on which it arises, weekend working will be compensated with time off in lieu.

Payment is made monthly in arrears on the 28th of each month (or preceding Friday if the 28th falls on a Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holiday Monday).
