Housing & Energy Consultant
Can you provide the innovative analysis needed to meet the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions, monitoring the level of fuel poverty and improving the UK housing stock? Can you employ the latest software and technologies to provide insights into these, and other, aspects of the Built Environment? We are looking for three new members to add to our team of data scientists and researchers to make a difference in the Housing & Energy Group at BRE.
The Housing & Energy Group have developed strong relationships with a wide range of commercial, industrial and public organisations, guiding and advising them on techniques and technologies to effectively manage energy use in buildings and improve the existing housing stock. Our work uses data to provide insights and guidance, which are used by our customers to tackle the major challenges they face in these areas.
We are looking for numerate candidates to expand our team working on a range of varied and challenging research and consultancy projects.
- Innovative uses of data and the application of data science to provide insight for our customers.
- Using new and emerging software and technologies to enhance the data we are collecting.
- Research and numerical modelling of trends in energy efficiency, fuel poverty, house condition and CO2 emissions
- Development of new surveys and specification of new data collection activities in these areas
- Analysis of data from the English Housing Survey (EHS) - England's largest and most comprehensive survey of housing
- Developing indicators & methods to help identify trends in housing and other data
- Interpretation and validation of results
- Writing reports and presenting research findings to customers
- Educated to degree level or above
- A degree in a numerate discipline (or equivalent experience)
- Able to demonstrate the required attributes through academic or work experience
- Numeracy and analytical reasoning skills are essential
- Strong analytical ability
- Strong IT literacy, or a demonstrable ability to develop these, ideally including experience of data analysis and / or data science
- Ability to use spreadsheets, statistical software such as R, SAS, SPSS and / or computer programming skills including Python, C++, C#, MATLAB or other languages
- Drive and determination
- Ability to work under pressure in a commercial research environment
- A willingness to learn new skills, and to pass new and existing skills onto colleagues
- Enthusiasm and initiative both individually and as part of a team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to be involved in a variety of different projects
- An advanced degree (Masters or PhD) is desirable but not essential
- Formal programming experience is desirable but not essential
- Experience in a commercial consultancy setting is desirable but not essential
- Experience in the fields of energy efficiency, housing or sustainability is desirable but not essential
