Responsibilities

  • To conduct activities, as allocated by line manager, using defined work practices or procedures by thorough understanding of principles and concepts.
  • To resolve problems or challenges defined by management by developing new working procedures/methods from broad and thorough understanding and experience of methods/process.
  • Execution of simple experiences at lab or pilot plant level and develop new working procedures/ methods to increase productivity and quality on Product Development activities.
  • Contribute to the generation of external Technical reports, publications and presentations via provision of robust data and project support activities
  • Work is allocated from managerial levels and technical guidance is available.
  • Task is achieved by thorough understanding of analytical science and techniques relevant to the analysis of solid substances, smoke and all materials associated with the construction or use of smoking articles.
  • Recognised proficiency in some laboratory techniques used to extract, separate and analyse trace level constituents in complex sample matrices.
  • Ability to apply, from broad and thorough understanding and experience of analytical science, appropriate solutions or approaches to identify and resolve problems.
  • Work conducted using principles of ‘Best Practice’.
  • Experienced Senior Technologists develop new working procedures, methods or working practices for management approval as a result of a problem or challenge defined by management, guidance from Technical Specialists is available.
  • Experienced Senior Technologists contribute to the generation of external technical reports, publications and presentations
  • Planning – medium term workload (current projects/activities).
  • Understands and applies their responsibilities under the EH&S policy.
  • Budget – contribute towards forecast and understands financial processes and controls.

  • Provision of appropriate supervision and coaching to support others.
  • Work is specific to the activities within the department.
  • May participate in working with internal project teams within R&D.
  • Experienced Senior Technologists will coach/train others in this level of activities.
  • Experienced Senior Technologists will generate and deliver R&D scientific presentations.
  • Identify and suggest changes to operating procedures and working practices for subsequent approval.
  • Experienced Senior Technologists may develop new working procedures, methods or working practices by objective evidence and validation for Management/Technical Review
  • Maintains awareness of technical developments relevant to their duties for business or self improvements

 About You

  • Directly relevant professional/academic achievement equivalent to 1st Degree in one of the physical sciences, engineering or product development related areas
  • Skilled use and understanding of preparative and instrumental techniques applicable to the isolation and measurement of the physical properties of, or trace level analytes in complex matrices
  • Relevant technical experience resulting in a thorough knowledge of good laboratory practice, principles of sample preparation, measurement & analysis and relevant experience in measurement & analytical techniques such as gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry or other relevant measurement techniques.
  • Experience of working in an ISO accredited and/or GLP compliant laboratory
  • We would expect someone who has been in the tobacco, food, environmental, forensic, pharmaceutical or contract analytical services industries for around 3-6 yrs to have and to be able to demonstrate that experience
  • Understanding of the potential value of an innovation from a consumer or business perspective
