As an intern, you will be in a learning role that is structured to provide you with essential hands-on experience delivering a specific project for the council. You will be working alongside experienced colleagues who will supervise your development and you will have a dedicated mentor to provide you with support and guidance throughout your apprenticeship.

The intern will act as the lead co-ordinator for Southampton City Council (SCC) on the Measurably increasing the use of Green Spaces in the SO18 Big Local Area Project which is designed to trial techniques for increasing children’s use of their local greenspace.

This project is designed to help deliver actions from the Children and Young People’s Healthy Weight Plan 2017- 2022 and to contribute towards reducing childhood obesity levels within Southampton. It is a partnership project involving officers from the Trees, Allotments and Parks Improvement Team (Lindsay McCulloch and Ian Bailey) and Public Health Team (Ravita Taheem) at SCC as well as representatives of SO18 Big Local at Townhill Park and the University of Southampton (UoS).


  • Undertake research around the topic of health and green space use with a specific focus on the role of natural green space in helping to combat obesity
  • Communicate the findings of your work to project partners and members of the public
  • Assist the SCC Environmental Education Officer in the preparation and running of biodiversity education sessions at the Townhill Park Infants and Junior Schools
  • Help to prepare and run a programme of nature-based activities for families to be held on Frogs Copse during July and August
  • Work with academics at the University of Southampton to develop monitoring standards
  • Secure participation of UoS students in helping to deliver the school-based activities
  • Use social media to publicise the activities before and during the summer
  • Draw together the findings
  • Develop materials that can be used to explain and promote the work to professional staff, elected members and the general public
  • Be in regular contact with the various project partners
  • Provide information to external agencies
  • Produce a presentation to support work aimed at rolling out the approach across the city
  • Engagement with a range of key stakeholders to building an understanding of the key audience from discussion with existing staff
  • Identifying key organisations and people who will be active in the campaign
  • Researching and developing the campaign
  • Implementing and evaluating the campaign, writing reports
  • Organise and attend meetings
  • Report for duty on time at work and college as detailed by the employer and college
  • Complete daily/weekly attendance records
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade of the post as required
  • Team member – Growth Hub, Intelligence, insight and Communications Team

About You

  • Ability to understand the needs of the city’s diverse and changing population

  • Be familiar with the Council's Health and Safety Policy

Hours: 37 hours per week
