Research Assistant (Product Design)

This project aims at creating different prototypes of a sports-wear kit (i.e. gloves, tops and bottoms), specifically designed to accommodate the requirements of wheelchair rugby players. Data has already been collected among several wheelchair rugby teams in the UK. This data informed us on how the athletes feel about the sportswear they are currently using and how they think it could be improved. From this data it was possible to identify that the gloves are the part of the sports-wear kit that needs to be addressed first, as it causes the most dissatisfaction in its current state. It is crucial that the prototypes produced respond to the end-users’ needs as well as the sports requirements.

The role of the assistant is to support the overall delivery of the project in the following ways:

Support with design of gloves;

Support with the selection of materials;

Support with the development of the prototypes.

Essential skills:

• Good visualisation skills - both in hand drawing and digital skills

• 3D computer modelling (Rhino or Solidworks)

• Good 3D physical model making skills

• Good Time Management & Project Planning Skills

• Able to meet deadline

• Good verbal presentation skills

Desirable skills:

• Previous experience in product design

• Knowledge in sports-wear
