Paid Graduate Teaching Internship (Primary and Secondary)
This job advertisement is for multiple primary and secondary GTI positions or vacancies arising in primary and secondary schools and academies across England that start throughout the year. These positions are fixed term paid, salaried internship or work experience style positions of one to three school terms in length.
These positions or vacancies being advertised are aimed mainly at new and recent graduates and final year undergraduate or postgraduate students who are interested in trying working and teaching in a primary or secondary school or academy.
Both primary and secondary schools and academies need more teachers as pupil numbers increase and, therefore, need more graduates who want to become newly qualified teachers. But they recognise that many graduates would prefer to try working and teaching in a secondary school or academy first before deciding about teaching as a career, based on real first-hand experience. If you are going to spend time and money qualifying as a teacher, then far better to do so in an internship setting so you can be certain that teaching is right for you and that your time and money will be well spent.
TryTeaching works directly with many primary and secondary schools and academies, multi-academy trusts and teaching school alliances to help them to set up and create GTI Internship positions suitable for graduates and to then find suitable graduates for those positions.
- In primary schools and academies, GTIs might be expected to support the teaching and learning of a range of primary curriculum subjects including literacy and numeracy. Degree subject is less important.
- But in the case of secondary schools and academies, degree and academic subject background may be more important as GTIs might be expected to support the teaching and learning and/or teaching of one or more of the following specific subjects:
- Priority subjects include Chemistry, Classics, Computing, Design & technology, English, French, Geography, Maths and Physics and Spanish; Other subjects might include Art & design, Biology, Business Studies/ Economics, German, History, Music, PE and RE.
- The work of a GTI is challenging as well as rewarding and can encompass a wide range of teaching and learning support roles including literacy and numeracy coaching, 1 to 1 and small group work, test and exam preparation, co-teaching, subject specific mentoring for KS4 and KS5 pupils, working with disadvantaged pupils and extra-curricular support.
- Depending on starting experience and the length of an internship, a GTI might start out in a teaching and learning support role, progressing into a cover supervisor or higher-level teaching assistant role and completing their internship in an unqualified teacher role.
- GTIs are assigned a line manager/ mentor by their employing school or academy and are developed and supported at every step of the way to gain wider experience and to take on additional, higher level responsibilities. Working alongside experience teachers and other school staff, GTIs are systematically introduced to the career of teaching.
- By the end of their internship, GTIs will have gained real first-hand experience. Many will now decide they wish to continue in teaching and to qualify as a teacher. There are different ways and options through which a GTI can qualify and TryTeaching and the GTI’s employing school or academy will provide, closer to the time, guidance, advice and support on the best options. Many employing schools or academies will wish to continue their relationship with the GTI, post internship, and, ultimately, to employ the GTI as a qualified teacher.
- Some GTIs may decide teaching is not the career for them after all. But their time will not have been wasted. It will have given them a wide experience and developed their employability skills. GTIs will be supported to build their own online portfolio of evidence of employment achievement, in the form of portable digital badges that they may use to support application to other employers.
- Applicants must be able to demonstrate through their application (academic track record, career history, and personal statement) that they are genuinely interested both in working with fellow educators and young persons in a school or academy setting.
- Genuine interest in trying teaching and in supporting teaching and learning with a view to testing their personal suitability for teaching as a career.
- They will also need to demonstrate that they have the potential to develop the necessary knowledge, understanding, skills and competencies to become a teacher should they choose to do so.
- Applicants must be able to prove their personal identity and that they have the right to reside and to work in the UK permanently.
- They must be ordinarily resident in the UK. Applicants must also be able to communicate effectively in the English language.
- Applicants will need to be able to demonstrate that they are suitable for working with young persons under 18 (DBS checks will be compulsory) and have the necessary health and fitness to work with young persons under 18.
- Secondary positions or vacancies being advertised through this job advert are for applicants that are able, with appropriate support and subject knowledge and understanding development, to teach and/or to support the teaching and learning of the specified secondary subject to secondary pupils.
- Applicants will most likely have a subject specific or related undergraduate or postgraduate qualification. Schools or academies may also consider applicants who have a strong subject specific or relevant A-levels (A or A*).
- Subject specific knowledge and understanding enhancement development may be made available.
- Applicants must have GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent) in maths and English. Additionally, a GTI who is interested in Primary must additionally have a GCSE at grade C or above (or equivalent) in a science subject.
- Applicants must have been awarded a degree by a UK higher education institution or an equivalent higher qualification by the time they start an internship.
- Applicants with a third class or pass degree are not excluded from applying but should note that academic track record may be a factor that potential employing schools and academies have regard to when considering applications for GTI Internship positions.
- Salary rates are set by employing schools and academies but will not be less than £1,200 per month for schools and academies outside of London rising to £1,500 per month for schools and academies within Inner London. These minimum salary rates are compliant fully with national and minimum wage requirements.
