Undergraduate Programme Overview:

HBS provides a 12-month placement programme for undergraduates who have a year-out in the industry as part of their degree. Placements offer exposure to all aspects of our renewable division’s operations and form an important step in learning about the role of Project Managers and Project Engineers in construction.

The structured programme will be tailored to meet the requirements of your degree course, to ensure you get maximum value. You will work on a diverse portfolio of cutting edge projects, and gain an excellent insight into the project life cycle. You’ll be expected to engage in on-the-job training across key elements of the construction process, including design, engineering, planning, health & safety, quality control and commercial. 


You will receive mentorship, first-class technical training and personal development opportunities that will equip you with the skills you need to advance in a career in construction. If you impress us over the course of the programme, there’s a chance of a permanent opportunity with HBS upon graduation.

The role

You will play a pivotal role in the delivery of our development pipeline, supporting projects at every stage. Successful applicants will be required to assist in the following tasks:

  • Day-to-day assistance to Senior Project Managers in the delivery of projects
  • Problem solving key design or installation challenges on projects in conjunction with design team and subcontractors
  • Promoting and upholding HBS’s reputation for providing the highest standards of site safety, health and welfare and protection of the environment
  • Understanding how engineering systems are planned and installed in live construction projects
  • Developing good working relationships with the client, site team and supply chain by promoting best practice throughout the whole construction process
  • Developing your knowledge and work practices within the guidelines of health & safety and legislative regulations
  • Work with our supply chain and surveyors to protect HBS’s commercial position
  • Develop an understanding in the technical practices and sequences on projects
  • Demonstrate your knowledge and skills to ensure efficient delivery of projects to a high quality
  • Ensuring our subcontractors are delivering at the highest standard
  • The placement is for Summer 2018 and will start (between July and September)

Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a commitment to project management and possess the following skills and qualifications:

  • Working towards achieving a 2:1 degree in a relevant Project Management, Construction Management or Engineering related degree
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Effective time & task management
  • Strong team-working and interpersonal skills
  • Logical approach to problem solving
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Minimum B in Maths and English GCSE or equivalent
  • Wishing to pursue a career within construction as a project manager or project engineer
